SFBA: Backend/Search Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Hybrid (In-office Mondays & Thursdays in San Francisco or New York; some teams may require more) Compensation: $330K base + equity

As an engineer on their Search team, you’ll build and scale mission-critical systems powering their search and AI features—a bedrock for individuals and cutting-edge teams at organisations like Figma, Toyota, and OpenAI.


🧠 What You’ll Be Doing

- Pushing the boundaries of real-time search: Denormalize, preprocess, and index every relevant content type users care about - Optimizing for speed: Identify and reduce index latency across the stack - Ensuring correctness and consistency: Guarantee every Notion change is instantly reflected in search - Scaling infrastructure: Own and tune search clusters—hardware, configs, and everything in between - Championing privacy and enterprise readiness: Drive world-class user privacy, security, and advanced features - Building internal tools: Own the feature-store infrastructure for enabling rapid, cost-effective, high-value information exposure - Cross-functional consulting: Partner with product engineers to model and onboard new content types to the stack

🧩 Must haves

- Strong backend engineering chops, ideally in search, data infrastructure, queueing, or distributed systems - Hands-on experience with at-least-once delivery and multi-stage data pipelines - Proven record shipping robust, scalable, and user-facing products - Excellence in cross-team collaboration (product, design, infra, data) - Computer Science degree or equivalent technical background

🧠 Nice to have (bonus points) - Experience delivering full-text search with Lucene, Elasticsearch, or Solr - Deep knowledge of large-scale distributed systems - Familiar with Spark, Flink, Kafka, Airflow, or YARN/Hadoop - Performance tuning of asynchronous systems under load - Previous experience in fast-growing startups or SaaS environments
